The Patuakhali Science and Technology University has a long history before it comes to its present stage. It has been gradually developed at the private initiative of the local people through the establishment of a Higher Secondary Institute as Janata College in the year 1972 as a private college. It has then been upgraded to Patuakhali Agricultural College under the affiliation of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh in the year 1979 with the mandatory objectives of producing agricultural graduates offering B.Sc.Ag. degree. Later, the college was nationalized on 1 February 1985 and was placed under the administrative control of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Ministry of Agricultural together with BAU affiliation.

The Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh launched a project of establishing ‘Science and Technology University’ in the former greater districts where no such universities exist.The act for the establishment of Patuakhali Science And Technology University came into effect through the Parliament on 12 July 2001 and approved by the Honourable President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.The University(PSTU) formally started functioning after promulgation of Government Gazette notification on 26 February 2002 with the former campus of Patuakhali Agricultural College as its nucleus. The PSTU took off its journey with the on-going Faculty of Agriculture of the College offering 4-years B.Sc.(Ag) Degree as its primary focus of academic program. At present the university is running with three other faculties names; Faculty of Computer Science And Engineering (CSE) offering 4-years B.Sc. Engg. in CSE degree,Faculty of Business Administration and Management(BAM) offering 4-years Bachelor degree on Business Administration(BBA) and Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine offering 4-years Doctor of Veterinary Medicine(DVM) degree.The University is also offering 4-years B.Sc. in Fisheries (Hons.) degree from the Department of Fisheries under the Faculty of Agriculture.In this session ,this university also have offered a 4-years B.Sc. (Hons.) in Disaster Management degree .
