Project Description :
The project was conducted with the financial assistance from Research and Training Centre (RTC), PSTU, Bangladesh for the fiscal year of 2017-18. The aim of the study was to assess the causes and impacts of land disputes in the study area. Dumki Upazila of Patuakhali District has purposively selected for this study. The research has directed based on primary and secondary data and information. This study revealed on an average each surveyed household having about 40.6 decimals disputed lands. Succession problem, false document and missing information on record are identified along with others as the main causes of land disputes in the study area. About 97 percent of the surveyed households have been trying to solve their land dispute through village shalish (judgment moderated by the community leaders), civil case, family discussion etc. Although, each household had tried average more than 4 times but still their disputes are continuing because of dissatisfaction of plaintiff/defendant, lack of man power in civil court, corruption in land sector etc. It is also explored that land related conflicts make a huge amount of direct and indirect monetary loss. Besides monetary loss, such conflict also hampered social status and wasted time of the respondents as well as hampered relationships between plaintiff and defendant. This study suggests, necessary steps should be taken by the government in order to stopping corruption of land related sector actors. In addition, shortening the period of argument especially in civil court case should be ensured.
