Biography
Dr. Jewel Howlader is a Professor and the current Chairman of the Department of Horticulture at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), Bangladesh. His career reflects a blend of academic excellence, leadership, and a lifelong passion for horticultural sciences and sustainable agriculture. Dr. Howlader’s early childhood began in the serene rural landscape of Kholifapattry, Mohanganj, Netrakona. His school years were filled with fond memories of friendship and outdoor activities. He attended Daulatpur Model Government Primary School (1988–1992) and later Mohanganj Pilot Government High School (1993–1998), where he excelled both academically and socially. A passionate player of carrom, card, and badminton, Dr. Howlader earned several champion’s trophies in local tournaments. His love for swimming and cycling remains one of his most nostalgic recollections—crossing rivers by swimming and exploring distant tourist spots on a bicycle with friends defined much of his youthful spirit.
After completing his Higher Secondary Certificate (Science) in 2000 from Nasirabad College, Mymensingh, Dr. Howlader pursued his B.Sc. in Agriculture (Hons.) from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), graduating in 2006. His family’s support and encouragement played a vital role throughout his educational journey. Dr. Howlader achieved his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Department of Horticulture, Sunchon National University, South Korea, in 2017. His doctoral research was conducted in the Biotechnology Laboratory, where he specialized in melon and lily plant genetic resources, molecular marker development, and microbial approaches to sustainable agriculture. During his stay in South Korea, he developed expertise in advanced agricultural technologies, including molecular marker application, greenhouse automation, hydroponic crop production, flower arrangement, tea processing, and aromatic soup formulation. His exposure to global agricultural research environments shaped his commitment to innovation in horticultural science.
He has also received several professional trainings, including a postgraduate certificate in seed technology, administrative and financial management training, understanding open educational resources and statistical data analysis using R programming. As a dedicated academic, Dr. Howlader teaches a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, such as: fruit production, vegetable production, postharvest technology of horticultural crops, advanced research methodology, homestead horticulture and advanced nursery management. His research focuses on climate-resilient crop production systems, particularly drip hydroponic systems, rooftop gardening, and food security under climate change scenarios. He actively supervises Master’s students working on sustainable and modern horticultural production technologies like drip hydroponic system.
As Chairman of the Department of Horticulture, Professor Howlader plays a pivotal role in leading academic, research, and extension programs. His responsibilities include: academic and strategic planning, research and development coordination, horticultural extension and outreach, human resource development and team management, institutional representation and collaboration, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. His leadership is marked by a commitment to advancing horticultural science, promoting innovation in agricultural education, and nurturing the next generation of horticulturists.
From a humble village in Netrakona to an accomplished academic leader, Dr. Jewel Howlader’s journey reflects resilience, dedication, and a deep-rooted passion for agricultural development. His contributions continue to inspire students, researchers, and professionals striving toward a more sustainable and productive horticultural future.
