Biography

Dr. Mohammad Atikur Rahman is a Professor (grade 1) of Entomology and Dean, Postgraduate Studies at Patuakhali Science and Technology University in Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (1997) and Master of Science in Entomology (2002) degree under scholastic supervision of Prof Dr. Mosharraf Hossain and Prof Dr. Khandakar Shariful Islam from Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Prof Atik received his PhD in Insect Systematics from the Kyungpook National University, Daegu, The Republic of Korea in 2012 under the supervision of Prof Dr. Yong Jung Kwon.

He was appointed to the Department of Entomology at Patuakhali Science and Technology University in 2003 as a lecturer. He was promoted to Full Professor in 2015 and the grade 1 professor in 2023. He has a career of 21 years teaching and 23 years research experience. He has made over 50 scholarly contributions with some Thomson Reuters Impact. He has been funded by Ministry of National Science and Technology, University Grants Commission Bangladesh, PSTU Research and Training Centre and LG Electronics Bangladesh. He managed more than 15 individual and collaborative research project and participated national and international seminar, workshop and conferences. He was awarded for excellent academic achievement during PhD study period in 2010 by Korean Government. He was also received appreciation award for research publications and 23 new species invention by the Lab of Insect Systematics, Kyungpook National University, Korea.

Prof Atik has invented 31 new species (23 from Korea, 8 from Bangladesh) of insects in the world and 49 new recodes in South Korea (21) and Bangladesh (28). He was conducted multi-year research focused on molecular and traditional insect taxonomy, and pest management as a part of insect conservation and biodiversity research. He deposited more than 25 gene sequences with accession number in the gene bank data base.

He supervised and co-supervised 35 MS and 5 PhD students. Prof  Atik is a founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Innovative Research (2016-present), the open access and peer reviewed journal. He is also a member of peer reviewer team, Ministry of Science and Technology Bangladesh. Dr. Rahman is a life member of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB)[050013417]. He is also a member of the Entomological Society of Bangladesh and the Entomological Society of Korea.

He participated in many training programs on curriculum design, quality assurance, teaching and learning, outcome based education and lab safety etc, He is also contributing his effort for the well being of the university involving himself as a grievance redressal officer, member of APA team, Academic master plan committee, Departmental purchase committee, admission committee, examination committee etc. He is holding the post of GKS publicity envoy (2023-2025) of National Institute for International Education, South Korea. 

He has research interest on insect biodiversity and conservation, insect systematics and phylogeny, molecular and morphological insect taxonomy, mathematical insect taxonomy, insect ecology and environment, Insect pest management. Current research in Insect Systematics Lab emphasizes the molecular identification of insect and their ecofriendly management, barcode preparation of some common pests in agriculture.

Prof Atik was born on October 20, 1976 in Habiganj but now his home district in Narsingdi. He is a father of two children. His wife is an audit and accounts officer in the office of the controller General of Accounts.
